Breath & Movement

Due Sunday, September 8.

This week we consider "being a body" by reading theories of bodily knowing from Mauss and Wacquant. I request a journal about intentional breath or movement practices this week.

This past week I have tried two different ways of bodily movement. The first practice I did was deep breathing for five minutes every morning. I did a practice of box breathing, where I breathed in, held, breathed out, and held again. I repeated this until I did 5 minutes of it. I found that this really centered me for the day and I felt like things were more under my control. I think I will definitely continue to do this as I feel so much better and in control of my life.
On top of the breathing, I have been going to the gym and walking/running every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I found that working out led me to be happier and feel better about myself. Along with the breathing, working out helped me feel more in control because of the schedule and the fact that I was doing it on the same days every week. Also, I have met multiple people while I have been at the gym which has helped me broaden my community and make friends.
I think this past week has truly helped me in my transition to college life. It has made it feel just a little bit easier to adjust to this new community, city, and way of life. I'm so happy to have found two ways of being a body that make things seem a little more in control.
